Whilst it may seem as though people have only been frequently traveling abroad for the last few decades, it turns out that our ancestors have been taking holidays overseas for centuries. The first documented cases of leisure-based travel were those of wealthy Romans using their famed systems of roads to reach their Mediterranean villas. However, traveling amongst the poorer classes was first seen during the Middle Ages when European pilgrims began to travel across borders to visit sacred places. Such pilgrims were able to make such trips on foot, either sleeping alongside the roads they were walking or in one of the affordable guest houses that began to pop up. In the 17th century, wealthier Europeans could be seen taking grand tours visiting major cities such as Paris, London and Rome to enrich their cultural understanding of the world. However, the first real boom in international travel came about in the 1840s when an extensive network of railways was built in Europe. At this time, people of all classes became able to travel for fun with the mid 19th century marking the beginning of modern tourism.
As we know, travel in the modern age has far surpassed that still. With the advent of affordable flights, bank cards that operate near-universally and smartphones that allow us to easily navigate completely unfamiliar localities, global travel has never been easier. This is all without even mentioning such comforts as access to multiple hot meals on long flights, endless entertainment and neck pillows (because who wants to do a 10+ hour flight with no neck pillow?).
Needless to say, modern travel is awesome. With the requisite resources, you can be almost anywhere that you desire within 2 days. We can get the benefits of immersing ourselves in foreign cultures, traveling to business meetings, or visiting friends based in distant countries and we can do it all in relative comfort.
However, this is not to say that fast, accessible travel around the globe does not come with a unique set of challenges. To name but a few, international travelers must contend with culture shock, language barriers, homesickness, jetlag, and visa requirements. Of all the challenges faced by globetrotters, the most intimidating of all is the prospect of falling sick or getting injured in a foreign country.
Getting sick whilst abroad is a frightening prospect for a multitude of reasons:
Not Being Registered in Local Medical Systems:
Far from home, your medical history, recent treatments, current conditions and medications are not conveniently stored for easy access by local first responders, medics or doctors.
Not Understanding Local Systems:
When you get sick at home, chances are you understand the process you have to go through to get the help that you need. However, in a foreign country it is a different story altogether and you must try to understand unfamiliar medical systems in the midst of a medical emergency.
Not Being Surrounded by Loved Ones:
A frightening reality especially for solo-travelers, your friends and family aren’t right around the corner to give you advice or a ride to the hospital. Perhaps for the first time ever, you are faced with a personal medical emergency that you must deal with alone.
Not Speaking the Local Language:
Perhaps the scariest possibility of all, falling sick in a country where you can’t even understand what the people around you are saying.
At best, a fun-spoiling inconvenience, at worst a terrifying medical emergency, the prospect of getting sick whilst abroad is an extremely unpleasant thought. Indeed, it is a thought that we would much prefer not to entertain altogether. However, it is a very real possibility and thus one that we must prepare for.
