From balancing deadlines, managing interpersonal relationships and ensuring that the kids get to school in time… life feels pretty extreme at times! However, for some people this day to day excitement is simply not enough and they go out of their way looking for more excitement by way of extreme sports. For most of us, a few trips to the gym, some pilates or maybe a jog during the week is enough to get our weekly fix of exercise and adrenaline. However, for others their idea of fun looks more like jumping off a mountain in a wingsuit, skiing or mountain biking!
Let us explore some of the most popular extreme sports enjoyed by some (slightly crazy) people across the US and worldwide:
Surfing:
Despite its connotations and associations with a chill day at the beach surfing is still, at its core, an extreme sport. Anything that involves boldly taking on nature in such a manner can only be called extreme, with experienced participants trying to challenge themselves and catch the biggest waves possible. It will not surprise you to learn that California is the US surf capital with over 403 locations for enthusiasts to pick from.
Skydiving:
Perhaps one of the first sports to spring to mind when considering the extreme, skydiving is premised on one of the most human desires of all… to know what it feels like to fly! Believe it or not, the first documented skydive was carried out by Andre-Jacques Garnerin in 1797 when the French aeronaut jumped from a hydrogen balloon some 3,200 feet above Paris. Since then, the sport has come a long way with over 3 million adrenaline junkies making the jump annually.
Combat Sports:
Unique in this list by virtue of the fact that they do not involve taking on nature but rather another human being, combat sports have soared in mainstream popularity over recent years. Wherever you go in the world, combat sports look very different. Here in the US, styles such as boxing and wrestling are favored. In Thailand, you can expect to see fighters engaging in the art of eight limbs; their proud national tradition of Muay Thai. On the other hand, should you take a trip to Brazil you will see a different style of combat altogether whereby individuals participate in a grappling based martial art known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Skiing and Snowboarding:
Arguably, more common extreme sports when compared to some of our other entries. It is estimated that there are roughly 14.94 million skiers in the US and 7.56 million snowboarders (all of whom claim that their method of getting down a mountain is best).
Skijoring:
Super niche but we had to include this on our list. Skiing whilst being pulled by a horse, dogs, or a vehicle, oftentimes over ski-jumps? It doesn’t get much more extreme than that!
It is fair to say that public opinion on extreme sports is fairly divided. For some, it is an awesome way to pump a little extra adrenaline into their lives and spice things up on the weekends. For others, they are a ridiculous and simply dangerous (although perhaps, at least, slightly admirable) venture. Regardless of your stance, I think we can agree that the excitement to be garnered from extreme sports is vested in their potentially dangerous nature. Whilst it's not for everyone, the reason that some people seek out danger is pretty simple. It is all to do with the pleasurable feelings associated with hormones such as dopamine and adrenaline that are released when jumping off a cliff or cage diving into shark-infested waters.
Whilst exciting in nature, extreme sports do present a heightened likelihood of harm or physical injury when compared to a 30 minute jog round a local park.
